CAMOS Research Design Workshop for Dissertation
Writers
CAMOS will host a research design workshop for
dissertation writers annually as resources permit. The workshop will
not be held in 2008.
The workshop is intended to provide an
opportunity for intensive review and constructive critique of
dissertation prospectuses for PhD candidates pursuing topics in
strategic studies. The goal is to improve the quality of the research
designs presented, to hone the design skills of the participating
students, and thereby to contribute to a stronger, more vital strategic
studies subfield in the future. The workshop consists of a daylong
review of two student prospectuses by four experienced faculty in the
field.
To be eligible, applicants must be PhD candidates in
political science or public policy who have either defended a
dissertation prospectus in the last year, or are able to provide a
draft of an as-yet undefended prospectus by July 1. Students will be
selected on the basis of the proposed topic's relevance to strategic
studies, and the strength of the applicant’s academic performance to
date.
The first CAMOS Research Design Workshop for
Dissertation Writers was held July 12-13, 2005, at the U.S. Army War
College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
The two students selected were offered a $500 honorarium. Travel costs
were paid by the U.S. Army War College Strategic Studies Institute.
Lodging was provided free of charge at the Distinguished Visitors
Quarters on post. The faculty participants for 2005 were:
-
·
Prof. Stephen Biddle, U.S. Army War College
Strategic Studies Institute
-
·
Prof. Elizabeth Kier, University of
Washington
-
·
Prof. Dan Reiter, Emory University
